Not Hydrated enough during Winter?
Feeling touchy? Hazy headed? Exhausted? Did
you ever blame it on colder and gloomy days of winter attributed to
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)? Need not be! The actual reason could
be you are just dehydrated with the outside weather being dry. Staying
hydrated during winter will be highly necessary for colder months too though we
might forget to drink water and fluids.
As we are exposed to cold weather in winter,
with every breath our respiratory system tries to balance the dry air reaching
our lungs by moistening and warming the air causing some fluid loss.
Our body can lose some fluid due to heavy
and deep breathing during workouts in cold weather too. Not feeling thirsty
during the winter season leads to a lower intake of fluids and water.
How to know you are dehydrated?
You might experience chapped lips, dryness
in the mouth, easily exhausted, dry skin, mood swings, poor memory, dark colored
urine in mild cases.
It can cause flushed skin, fainting,
confusion, seizures, and injuries in severe cases.
As per the research studies, consuming very
little amount of water and fluids can impair kidney function with a higher threat
of kidney disease, frequent urinary tract infections, higher lipid levels, and other
chronic conditions including diabetes.
How much water do we need every day?
While the amount of water that’s required
by the body depends from person to person, several other factors play a role too.
But ideally, it would be at least 2L of water for an average person in all seasons.
It can sound like a lot for many people during the cold season. What do we do?
Substitutes for cold water
1)
Including fruits and vegetables
high in water content not just hydrates our body, but can provide plenty of
antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fibers too to stay healthy
2)
Having warm soup on cold days
can soothe the body, and digestive system and be nutritious while maintaining the hydration
3)
Sipping warm water dispensed in
an Insulated bottle can make it easier to stay hydrated on a busy cold day
4)
Infused water, Herbal teas, and a range
of Green teas can balance fluid in our body, while also can enhance metabolism
5)
Warn milk with sprinkled spices
like Cinnamon or Turmeric would be perfect to feel comfortable and better sleep
on a cold night
What to avoid?
Having caffeinated drinks like soda, coffee, and tea can make dehydration worse.
Excess water also can be harmful to our
bodies depending on the body's needs and health conditions. While these are
generalized suggestions, it’s always better to understand what suits the best
for your body and to consult your doctor if you have any specific health
conditions.
